Trillion Fund was founded in 2011 by a group of passionate investors to open up opportunities to profit from clean energy to everyone, through crowdfunding. They had a big ambition: to help drive forward the $1 trillion of annual global investment required to reach the scale of clean energy generation needed to prevent further global warming - and to give people good returns on their investment into the bargain.
Trillion launched an affiliate marketing platform for renewable energy projects seeking to raise money from the crowd in June 2013.
It obtained interim permissions to operate as a peer-to-peer lending platform in March 2014 and began offering loans directly in June 2014, giving potential investors a range of options, from peer-to-peer loans, to traditional funds, to community share raises.
It completed a merger with FundIt.Buzz (formerly known as Buzzbnk), the crowdfunding platform for social businesses and projects, in November 2014. FundIt.Buzz continues to operate as a rewards-based platform for charities and social enterprises.
In September 2015, due to changes in the renewable energy policy in UK, Trillion stopped offering new renewable energy loans on the platform and looked to pivot the business model to leverge its technology and regulatory assets. Trillion Fund continues to service the existing loans under management: E2 Energy, E5 Energy and The Converging World.
In Spring 2016, Trillion launched Your Brand Crowdfunding, a white-label, debt-based crowdfunding service that enables medium-sized businesses to crowdfund on their own websites.
Over the course of five years, including the FundIt.Buzz business line, Trillion has facilitated raising more than £5million for over 150 projects and processed more than 12,000 transactions across its various crowdfunding services.
Trillion is a registered member of the UK Fundraising Standards Board (FRSB) for its charity and social enterprise rewards-based crowdfunding services and for loans-based crowdfunding it is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Trillion is also a member of the UK Crowdfunding Association and follows its code of practice.
Trillion is privately-owned. Dame Vivienne Westwood, the fashion designer and environmentalist, is a majority stakeholder.
